New Learning Center to Establish School to Work, Career Based Program
NEW LEARNING CENTER TO PROVIDE MANY OPTIONS FOR SUCCESS FOR STUDENTS IN BREVARD COUNTY

Three veteran educators have established a community learning center to provide many paths to success for students in Brevard County. According to executive director, Paulette Coombs, “the center’s primary focus is to establish a school-to-work- career based curriculum that will ultimately provide opportunities to help to stimulate economic growth of the Palm Bay, Melbourne and neighboring communities.
Premier Innovations Learning Center, a 501c3, community based learning center will launch its program in three phases: Tutoring in over 100 academic courses which is now being offered face to face at the center and online. Students who enroll now will be able to access their courses and their teachers from anywhere they have access to the internet and a phone. The school-to-work career based vocational program is currently being developed with community partners who will help to design curriculum and provide experiential learning to include : internship, job shadowing, and future, full time employment for graduates. The center will apply for a charter to transition to a vocational charter school for students in grades 9-12 and for nontraditional learners.

Dr. Carol Johnson- Coote, the center’s academic director said one of the primary focus of the center is to provide a comprehensive and dynamic college readiness program for non traditional learners who want to be prepared for college level work, for students who want to avoid college prep courses, and for college and college –bound students who need help in specific subjects or skills.

Coombs stated that “Premier Innovations Learning Center’s Vocational program will allow us to become players in the manufacturing industry. Our students will learn skills, manufacture products, and gain industry certification in specific fields. In recent years there has been a consistent call for common sense plans to re-invigorate American manufacturing capacity and increase economic prosperity.”
The founders of Premier Innovation learning Center believe the best common sense approach will include a concentrated effort to improve technical education and an understanding of the importance of the manufacturing industry in K-12 public schools, but more importantly, to prepare America’s students to engage in the design and creation of new products, and train students in careers that build things in America.
According to Coombs “If we want our students to have good jobs, and we want to stimulate economic growth, High school education must train students to participate in manufacturing products in America. In establishing a successful vocational program, Premier Innovations Learning Center will be training its students to be innovative and creative; thus, students will design, manufacture and sell products in the community center and online and thereby contribute to the growth of our local economy. ”
Additional information can be obtained at pcglearningcenter.org by calling the center at 321-622-5717, or by attending their open house on June 28, 2012 at 3270 Suntree Blvd. Melbourne, FL 32940.
